Using Imagery to Share Laughter and Love

with Debbie Harbinson MHI, RN, HNB-BC

The presentation will discuss therapeutic laughter and the benefits. It will also be experiential by introducing enjoyable laughter exercises through various imagery scenarios that can be used anywhere. The exercises are offered in a systematic program, referred to as a Laughter Circle, which has demonstrated improved patient outcomes without being delivered in a funny manner (like a clown or comedian).

By combining breath, laughter and imagery, the practitioner is able to leverage these natural functions to move both the client and the practitioner toward a better feeling and connection. Through practicing laughter on a regular basis, people report an awareness that external circumstances do not dictate their feelings about current issues. They find that it is their mood which influences their behaviors and lightening up has an impact on their thoughts which in turn changes their mood. Love, associated with happiness and an enjoyment of others, also involves care, closeness, protectiveness, attraction, affection, and trust. People who experience more positive feelings can then imagine love more easily about themselves or others. Images of loved ones and spaces are used in the design of the laughter exercise.

As humans, both laughter and imagery allow us to look beyond the limitations of our personal thought systems to a deeper intelligence, to the creative force within us all.

About Debbie Harbinson MHI, RN, HNB-BC

As a board certified holistic registered nurse with experience in most areas of nursing and a care partner for my mother, I learned the significance of self-compassion and the art of play in my own well-being. Honing my skills in these areas also enhanced my relationship with my husband, daughter, family, friends and coworkers. During this time, I completed a Master Degree in Healthcare Innovation (MHI) from Arizona State University while being mentored in the World Laughter Tour (WLT), to become Master Trainer and Speaker on Therapeutic Laughter and Humor, and serve on the WLT Advisory Board. In addition to my serious work on laughter, I have followed a path of advanced training in the 3 Principal Global Community, and certifications in Change Coaching, Medical Hypnotherapy, Integrative Imagery, and Mindfulness techniques.

My hope from this presentation is that you recognize your inner mirth, which is always ready to come out and play!
